How we do things differently

  • Play Therapy is a non-directive type of therapy that helps children communicate their inner experiences through the use of toys, therapeutic relationship, and a safe environment. Children are free to play in almost any way they choose, including with toys, creative and sensory materials, or role-play. Play therapy helps children develop confidence and self-esteem, make choices, find healthy ways of communicating, promotes resilience and coping, and improves relationships. Traditional talking methods of therapy can be less useful for children, whose brains are not yet built to use words or communicate difficult feelings or experiences.

In play therapy, we focus on the whole child, not just the child’s problems. It provides the optimal environment for children to process their experiences, the difficult or even traumatic moments that haven’t been healed, and are otherwise stored as dysregulation and stress in their bodies. When children are supported to play out and heal these experiences in the presence of a connected relationship, they experience greater wellness, self acceptance, independence and resilience.

At Connected OT - the focus is ‘connected’ play sessions between child and carergiver, supported by therapists. Evidence suggests the most meaningful change occurs when caregivers are closely involved in the play therapy process.

  • Play therapy creates the optimum environment and relationship for kids to be their most authentic selves. The conditions of play therapy aims to communicate ‘I see you; I hear you; I understand you,’ exactly as you are. It provides the conditions for children to explore and develop a positive self-concept, so they may grow up feeling capable and positive about themselves and their unique essence. Play therapy helps children to trust their inner guidance and intuition.

Connected OT meets children exactly where they are at, providing a safe space to delight in their uniqueness and quirks. We are dedicated to connecting with your networks and to increase awareness, compassion and understanding. Our goal is to communicate to create optimal environments that allow you to be understood, and therefore, safe to heal, grow, and thrive. As a mobile service we can visit schools, daycares, and other community settings to support this communication.

  • Play therapy is non-directive, which means the child leads the way. We trust the innate wisdom of children to heal their previous experiences which may include traumatic events, as and when they are ready. We do not ask questions, or lead them in anyway. Rather, we trust that children will play what they need, when they feel safe enough and ready enough.

Play allows children to distance themselves from events through symbolic play rather than confronting the experience or trauma directly (e.g. answering questions). This provides a gentle and safe approach.

Connected OT partners closely with you and your child, to ensure all family members feel safe at every step of the way, and guide and support you in the moments where it feels 'wobbly.’

  • With over 12 years experience as an Occupational Therapist, we specialise in looking holistically at the people and environments around the child. We provide specialist expertise in helping you understand your child’s sensory preferences and meeting these needs in creative ways.

What to expect

  • We complete the first appointment at your home or via video conference, without your child present. Over a long session, approximately 1.5 hours, we speak in depth about your concerns regarding your child, and celebrate their unique strengths and quirks. We cover details from conception to your child’s world right now.

We set meaningful goals, that we’ll continue to revisit to make sure our approach is working for everyone.

  • We guide and support you to embed play therapy techniques and strategies into your daily life with your child. You decide what works best for your family. Either formal ‘Connected’ play sessions each week, or a more informal approach. ‘Connected’ play sessions vary in length from 30 - 45 minutes, depending on the child’s age and needs.

We will support you to create a ‘play kit’ that you will use specially for the ‘Connected’ play sessions. Therapists are there to support, guide, reflect, refine, and hold you as you develop this new way of being with your child.

We work in blocks of intervention, up to 12 sessions at a time. At the end of each therapy block, we will review your initial goals and make a plan moving forwards that best supports you.

  • You may decide that a mentoring approach suits you best. We can provide coaching and support in making sense of, and supporting your child’s unique needs and challenges, to work towards your family’s goals. We use a holistic approach, informed by our experience in play therapy and occupational therapy. This includes expertise in emotional regulation, sensory processing, behaviour and relationships, and developing independence in self care activities. This can include coaching in play therapy skills, where we can reflect on your in-home play therapy sessions using videos and a reflective approach. This support is also suited to Telehealth and older clients (e.g. age 12 and up), where the use of toys and play is not best suited to their interests and needs.

  • Where there are complex needs, a history of complex trauma, or it just works best for the family dynamic, we can provide 1:1 play therapy sessions with your child, in your own home.

Sessions vary in length from 30 -45 minutes depending on your child’s age and needs. We will create a designated play space and consistent time each week.

This is a medium - longer term service as our therapists support your child to work through the 4 play therapy stages.

Child only sessions may also be provided by Telehealth. This suits older clients, from the age of approximately 12 and up. We work on the same goals and areas of need as we do younger clients. However, support is offered verbally, visually, and with other mediums that are suited to Telehealth and engage older minds.
